When we started off photographing Mila, I thought she was going to be the easiest baby ever!!! She was so calm and still…and then…she wasn’t ;) She just wanted her mama, and I can’t quite blame her there! She did make us work, but the photos we did get of her are incredibly sweet! Thank you guys for your patience :) Here are a few faves…

Happy BIRTHday, Maeve!

This time has rolled around yet again, and I found myself caught in the middle of too many emotions. One of sweet nostalgia…remembering back on when I went into labor, terrified of what was ahead of me, of the unknown. Terrified of too many things, of all the things that a new mother thinks of over and over and over again. But the one thing I wasn’t terrified of was whether or not I would be a good mother. Not because I think so highly of myself (by any means…insert innumerable faults here) or because I knew what I was doing (again…terrified of the unknown), but because there is no comprehensible way that one human could love another human with such deep intent and not want the absolute best for the person. It’s just not possible.

So whether or not I feed Maeve the right foods, put her to bed correctly, discipline her, teach her how to interact with others, etc. is all subjective. But the way I love her…that’s undeniable. The feeling of my heart aching when I look at her because I want so much good for her…that feeling tells me that I am doing something right, that I am a good mother to her.

Another feeling that arises is longing. A longing to remember every single second of this time, this moment! I understand it is not intellectually possible, and I think that is the reason I long so much. I am so afraid I will forget the way I felt the first time I laid eyes on her, the first time we brought her home, the time I accidentally shut her finger in the sliding glass door while I was nursing her (remember above when I said I had innumerable faults? Yup…this was one of them) and she screamed in a way that only your child can scream and it feel like you wish you could do anything to take away the hurt, the way she learned how to wave hello, the way she said “tait tu” (for thank you), the first time she said “I dub (love) you, mommy”, the way she runs down the hallway, the way she told me one night as we were climbing into her chair to read bedtime stories, “thank you mommy growing me in tummy” (this is a particularly special memory as any of you mothers can imagine! Your child being grateful that you grew her…doesn’t get much better than that), and the morning of her second birthday when she woke up to a room full of balloons and came into our bedroom and the first words out of her mouth were, “thank you mommy, dadddy”. All of these things that bring so much joy to my life…I long to remember every one of them!

So, on May 7…we spoiled her…and it felt wonderful! I spent extra long snuggling with her during nap time and looking at her, wondering how in the world did I participate in something so tremendous? And being thankful that I did.

Now that I have teared up just writing this post, I will detour away from the mush :)

Maeve has been so excited for her birthday. For weeks and weeks, she has been saying, “Maevey happy birthday coming…May seven!” She was also thrilled to have the happy birthday song sung to her, and then she could blow the candles out. So, after dinner when it came time to sing…her face lit up in a way the brought me tears (clearly I’m a softy). It was absolutely beautiful to watch the excitement. And the candles…well, that was a little different. She was so happy and then so overwhelmed  (I think), that she started crying. We were able to talk about it a bit and then she decided she wanted mama to help her out…so we blew them out together. Here is a look at our May seven…

Silly Maeve…

Helping daddo make the whip cream for her pancake…

This is her excited and slightly embarrassed look (which I love)…

So pumped…garden gloves and apron and skateboard…oh yea…

This M.E.L.T.S me…

I will forever love May seven!

Thank you for to all of our friends and family for coming to celebrate Maeve’s second birthday yesterday. We appreciate and love you all!

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the wonderful mothers (especially mine) that I know. Like Maeve says, Mothers are “special” humans!
